The Gazeley Ceiling has its own website https://www.thegazeleyceiling.org.uk/

The book “Men, Myths and Monsters” first showcased the medieval carvings on the ceiling of All Saints’ and created a good deal of academic interest in the photographs of the apparent hotchpotch of images.

As part of the ceiling refurbishment, we have published a website showing all the carvings on the ceiling – https://www.thegazeleyceiling.org.uk/

Dr. Sarah Cassell, an independent academic, mapped the positions of all the carvings and Pat Spillane painstakingly photographed each one at high resolution. Paula Wright and Pat then designed the beautiful website which is a comprehensive resource for anyone wanting to study Gazeley church’s important medieval ceiling.

In the process of photographing the ceiling, even older carvings on the roof of the nave have also been recorded on the website, three of them are shown below.

The nave ceiling and three of its carvings.

We are immensely grateful to Paula and Pat for this important contribution to our local history.

Work has begun to replace the Chancel Roof

September 16th September saw the long awaited beginning of work to repair the leaking roof of the chancel to protect the medieval carvings of our ceiling.

We are immensely grateful to all who donated to raise the money needed, many from the local area, who gave so generously in support of the Save Our Ceiling appeal.

Welcome to our new Curate Raul.

Our new curate Raul will be Ordained on the 29th June at the cathedral.

We would like to invite you to his welcome service on the 30th June at Gazeley church at 10.45 am, a service which will include the Holy Baptism of Arthur Skeggs.

Following the service there will be a lunch for Raul and his wife Keeley in the Village Hall. All are welcome.

Wendy Childs is co ordinating the lunch, and any offers of help would be much appreciated.

Talk by Simon Johnson

Simon Johnson gave an illuminating talk on Saturday 22 April in the church, describing his work on the book Men Myths and Monsters (https://gazeleychurch.org/men-myths-and-monsters/) , and gave us insights into the medieval minds which were responsible for the beautiful carved chancel roof in the church. Simon has extensive experience as a church historian, and he reiterated that he has never seen a collection of carvings comparable to those on the Gazeley ceiling.

The event was extremely well attended, and we were fortunate to receive some very welcome donations to help replace the leaking chancel roof and halt the deterioration to this important and beautiful piece of history.

World day of Prayer Friday March 1st

Palestine-2024

On Friday 1st March, we will be taking part in the World day of Prayer – Palestine 2024. Our service will begin at 12.00 midday and will be part of the worldwide circle of prayer. This year we will be focussing on Palestine, which will be particularly poignant.

All are welcome (men and women) and the service will be followed by a ploughman’s lunch.
